This ancient city is today one of the most beautiful centres of this island’s cultural heritage. In its prime, the city, inside it’s 3½ miles strong encircling walls, housed hundreds of thousands of people. The remains of this ancient city comprised of many buildings and irrigation works. The buildings, mainly brick structures, included the inner city area (with two palace complexes of two different kings), inner & outer city walls, a number of monastic complexes with stupas, image houses & dwelling cells of monks. It’s known for Galle Fort, the fortified old city founded by Portuguese colonists in the 16th century. Stone sea walls, expanded by the Dutch, encircle car-free streets with architecture reflecting Portuguese, Dutch and British rule. Notable buildings include the 18th-century Dutch Reformed Church. Galle Lighthouse stands on the fort’s southeast tip.
